Carpet is one of the important additions to home interiors. It is both functional and adds an ounce of elegance to the floor space. As a house owner, it’s your responsibility to do regular carpet cleaning and keep it fresh and dirt-free.
Because like all other things in your home, even your carpet gets dirty. In fact, it will happen frequently, because of the foot traffic it receives. In addition to this, your carpet may even take in a lot of spills and splatters. If you find dry mud or soil particles, then a regular vacuum cleaning process will be sufficient. However, if there is some food spill then you have to get down and do some good carpet cleaning.
For food and beverage spill, you have to do a proper spot cleaning for removing the stain. Suppose you dropped petroleum jelly, then you have to be little careful because the product is greasy. The regular cleaning process will not be sufficient. With your wrong procedures, you may even damage your carpet. To help you in this process, I have explained a few simple cleaning steps for tackling petroleum jelly stains.
Step-By-Step Process to Remove Petroleum Jelly Stain from your carpet
- Scoop the Excess Spill
Before you get down to cleaning the stain, remove the excess as much as possible. Use a dull knife or spatula for the task. Using a sharp object can damage the carpet fiber.
As the petroleum jelly is sticky you have to be careful not to spread it to the cleaner area.
- Rub with Isopropyl Alcohol
The petroleum jelly is an oil-based product. So, it’s obvious that you’ll find an oily patch over the area. In order to blot and clean the stain, you have to break the stain and rubbing Isopropyl alcohol will help you in that.
Instead of isopropyl alcohol, you can even use a dry-cleaning agent or citrus solvent. You have to make sure that the dry-cleaning agent is not flammable.
- Blot the Area
Do not rub, but gently work around the stain and start blotting it up. Use absorbent paper or microfiber cloth for the task.
If the stain is completely lifted then clean the area with clean water.
- Apply Mild Detergent Solution
Suppose the stain is still visible, then prepare a mild detergent solution and spray over the stained area. Leave the solution for some time, maybe 5 to 10 minutes. Repeat the blotting process and continue until the cloth or the paper stops picking the color from your carpet.
- Clean the Residue
The area may appear clean after using the detergent solution, but the area will be sticky. If you leave it like that, it will attract dirt over time and the spot will be filthy again.
To avoid that, spray warm water and clean the spot without over-wetting the carpet.
For drying the area, place thick cotton towels over the spot and place any heavy object over them. Use your carpet only when it is completely dry.
Benefits of Having a Clean Carpet
- Improve the Appearance of your Home
An unclean carpet is not something you would like your guests to see. Even you’ll think twice before using the filthy carpet. Also, that one bad addition may completely affect the appeal of your beautiful interiors.
On the flip side, keeping your carpet clean, you’ll improve the value of your interiors.
- Promote Cleaner Environment
An unclean carpet can harbor germs and induce allergens into the air that you breathe inside. If the indoor air quality is bad then it may trigger allergy symptoms and make everyone sick.
However, you can avoid such things by keeping your carpet clean. You need to vacuum regularly and spot clean whenever it is needed and you need to do it without waiting for long. Apart from all these, you have to hire professional carpet cleaners at least twice a year and give deep cleaning services to your carpet.
Removing spills before they set-in will reduce your work and minimize the damage. If you are clear about the spot cleaning process then you should go ahead do the cleaning otherwise, you have to call professional carpet cleaner and achieve safe cleaning results.
